The importance of family is perhaps one of the most influential and important lessons I've learned from having two working parents. My parents are always willing to put our family ahead of their busy work schedules and do anything and everything for me and my sister. My parents are always willing to stop what they're doing for our family. For example, when Rachel had sports events, my dad would cancel his patients in order to attend all of her basketball and softball games. This was the same mentality for me when I had dance competitions. My parents knew how important it was to attend parent-teacher conferences in high school, and would clear their schedules so they were able to attend. Even though their days were busy with work, my parents always knew how important family dinners were. Almost every night we would eat dinner together and every Sunday night we would go out. Sunday night dinner is a tradition we have been doing for several years, and each Sunday Rachel and I get to choose the restaurant. My parents also always make sure we go on family vacations. They block their schedules for two weeks and use this time to appreciate our family. We all love these vacations and they are an excellent time for family bonding and relaxing. Here at Emory, I find myself putting my family above everyone and everything. I make sure I video chat with Rachel everyday. During our daily video chats, she tells me about her day and her problems. I also make sure I call or text my parents once a day. This is a great way to stay connected with their lives and they can remain updated on mine. Putting your family first has so many benefits and I am extremely blessed that my parents have taught me the importance of family and relationships.
